I've noticed with the new set of paintings I recently uploaded that the colors seem really washed out. I compared the jpgs on DA with the ones I have on my computer and there is definitely a difference. The ones on my computer are calibrated to be true to the actual paintings so I don't want to darken/saturate them to fix the jpgs on DA. Does anyone have any advice? Is this an issue with FireFox? I'm befuddled.

UPDATE:
So it seems that the problem arose from resizing the images in DA. I uploaded them at 1024px wide but downsized them to 900px for ease of viewing. I just uploaded each painting at 900px wide and they look great. In the future I'll be sure to upload everything at the size I want people to see rather than depending on a website to re-size an image. Now on to fix the problem on my blog!

I just saw your blog, I have the same issue. I use very large sRGB JPGs and have noticed that the true colors only display when I use the full view at their original size. But that means I would have to forfeit the watermark and being photography, it seems to be the lesser of two evils to keep a smaller version with watermark if the colors are off a bit than to have the original up for anyone to steal.

It's a tough decision. I wish there was a back-end, digital thumbprint that would scramble an illegally gotten image but that might be asking too much. For now my recourse is to only post low-res images that can't be reproduced faithfully in print.

Heh. If I managed to find myself three part-time volunteer assistants, I have a feeling you'd be able to do the same.

Most PC browsers cannot read color profiles other than sRGB. Convert your files appropriately. I'm looking at them with a color space aware browser on a macintosh with a calibrated monitor, so I could use Adobe 1998 if I was to only view with Safari. I know the Mac version of Firefox is color space aware. I imagine the PC version is as well. For fun, I just compared the same photo with an sRGB color profile open in Photoshop with the same photo in dA and Model Mayhem and with a version downloaded from dA open in photoshop. No difference. Converting to sRGB seems to be the solution. I don't think png is a solution, many sites do not accept them. Compared to JPEGs they're HUGE.

The Help and FAQ section makes the erroneous statement that web browsers cannot read color profiles and that you should not apply a profile. Use sRGB

I'm going to try reloading the images today with sRGB and all at the desired display size (no resizing) to see if it works. I'll keep everyone posted.

Thanks for taking the time to lend the advice!

I have seen this too.

I believe what is happening is that DA is stripping out the color profiles as it resizes the photos. Saving with a different color profile should resolve the issue, but I'm not sure which one is correct. (Probably Adobe RGB or sRGB.)
